In terms of budget accomodation, you may want to check out the Hansen Hotel in Jesmond - £25 a night for students inc. breakfast (about 12 minutes walk to the university). Other option would be the Travelodge, it is in central Newcastle and costs around 27 GBP per night (saver rate).
Other budget options might include hostels or B&Bs located at the coast (accessible by metro, 25 minutes). The contact details of these and some more hotels and B&Bs can be found here: www.northumbria.ac.uk/static/worddocuments/acc/hotelguestlist.doc?view=Standard
TRAVEL
TRAVEL TO THE UK (NEWCASTLE AIRPORT): Newcastle has an international airport so the easiest way is to fly here directly. There is direct access to the city centre via metro, you will be able to buy a ticket from the ticket machines at the airport - might be useful to have some coins with you. The city is divided into travel zones: to buy a single ticket from the airport to the city centre press 3 on the „single“ panel (zone 3). Travel takes about 20 minutes. If you will be staying in the Premier Inn you should get off at Monument station. You can check the metro timetable here: http://www.nexus.org.uk/sites/nexus.org.uk/files/documents/metro/MT1012.30x20.APT_.pdf
TRAVEL TO THE UK (OTHER AIRPORTS): if you are unable to fly to Newcastle you can try any of the following airports: Edinburgh, Leeds-Bradford, Manchester, Tees Valley. Please make sure before making the booking that you have a train connection after arrival. You can check the train timetables and book your train tickets via this link http://www.nationalrail.co.uk. Early booking is strongly recommended as train fares can get expensive when booking close to the day of travel. Online booking generally allows you to pick up your ticket before travel at ticket machines at the train station or even to get your ticket e-mailed (where applicable).
TRAVEL BY TRAIN: if you arrive to Newcastle by train you can either walk to the university (20-25 minutes), take a taxi (taxis usually available on a rank) or take the metro from the train station. Be aware that there is ramp access to all platforms at the station so please make sure you keep your tickets until you leave the station. Also note that you don’t need to leave the station in order to get to the metro. Once you go through the ramp area (where you need to insert your ticket in order to exit) please turn right and follow the metro sign. You only need to take 2 stops (direction: the coast/Whitley Bay) in order to get off at Haymarket station. There is a map in the Venue showing how to get to the venue from Haymarket.
